ENJOY BIRDING IN MANY DIFFERENT HABITATS AROUND TRONCONES

The best guide to birding in Mexico is Roger Tory Peterson’s “A Field Guide to Mexican Birds” which we have in the Hostel library. It’s a great resource for locating both indigenous and migratory birds especially around Troncones. Birds that have been spotted at the Hostel include the Mexican Jay, various types of colorful Tanagers, a rare Trogan and various shore birds. Pink flamingos and bitterns have also been spotted in the La Boca lagoon. For the serious birder, we would suggest identifying birds in advance of your visit and note their local habitat and use our reference book at the Hostel for locations.  For those guests with serious birding tendencies, the iPhone has a great app called, “iBird Pro” completed with bird calls. That way you can trick birds to coming to you!

TURTLES EVERYWHERE!

If you love turtles, you will love Troncones in the Fall and Winter months from October through February when baby turtles get released into the ocean. If you don’t see turtles on the beach you might want to visit them in the water.   With a local fishermen’s panga (boat) you can get close to turtles while enjoying a peaceful morning boat ride in calm seas and if you’re lucky, you may see two turtles mating which is very funny view!

Troncones has 2 established turtle centers dedicated to the conservation of local sea turtles and their habitats. Some of the turtle eggs are collected by local conservationists and safely kept until the baby turtles hatch and can be safely released to ensure the best survival rate.

You might want to look for Juan Carlos, our local turtle expert, who will give you his passionate and fascinating turtle presentation. During the winter, turtles are hatched and released in the late afternoons on the beach.

HOT SPRINGS IN MEXICO?

There are two hot springs within a 20-minute drive of the Hostel. We would be happy to give you directions. One is very popular so it’s best to arrive early for your mud bath. Enjoy covering yourself with mud and discover how smooth your skin will feel.
